Many of us want to get in shape and see great results but don’t always know the best way to get there. Saying you want to get in shape is one thing, but knowing how to set the right types of goals is the real key.
Setting up effective fitness goals is no easy task, especially when we are constantly on-the-go with busy schedules filled up with family, jobs, and personal lives.
As a fitness trainer Spencer Schneider has put together some important pieces of advice about how to set fitness goals that will keep you on track and lead to your desired results.
Make your goals specific
Often we will say things like, “My New Year’s resolution is to get back in shape” or “My goal is to lose weight for the summer” or “This year I’m going to run more”. If your goal setting stops there, you will likely lose track of your progress and have trouble staying consistent after a week or so.
Instead, Spencer Schneider encourages individuals to really hold themselves accountable by setting specific goals that can be can measured or quantified. Some examples of specific fitness goals might include:
- Run a mile every other day
- Do a core workout every morning for 30 minutes
- Run one 5k every month
- Do 25 pushups everyday
Start with small goals and work your way up
If you reach too high from the start, you will likely become frustrated and fail to meet your set goals. For example, if you are just starting to get back in shape, do not set a goal to achieve something you were able to do easily when you were in good shape. If you want to start running again but haven’t ran in a while, start with a mile or whatever might be easily attainable for you while still giving you a little challenge. From there, slowly increase the distance by a mile or so or work on improving your time and speed. Setting goals and increasing them in small increments will allow you to see how you are improving and notice your results.
Don’t compare yourself to others
By now you have probably realized there are hundreds of different fitness programs and dieting routines out there and that everything doesn’t work for everyone. Throughout his career, Spencer Schneider has seen many individuals wasting there time trying to mimic the routine of someone else without seeing any results. The best way to get results is to develop a fitness routine that works best for you specifically. It may take some trial and error to find that perfect fitness routine, but setting the right goals will help you find your way to a healthy and active lifestyle quickly and effectively.
